1) Название самой длинной улицы Нью-Йорка, протянувшейся через весь Манхэттен [ Manhattan], Бронкс [ Bronx, the] и далее на север через небольшие городки до столицы штата Нью-Йорк г. Олбани [ Albany]Особый вид коммерческого театрального искусства. В 20-е - 30-е гг. XX в. в непосредственной близости к Бродвею в районе 40-60-х улиц Манхэттена [ Manhattan] сформировался театральный район г. Нью-Йорка, большинство театров которого ставили бурлеск и шоу менестрелей [ minstrel show] и другие легкие музыкальные спектакли коммерческого театра. Сегодня Бродвей часто критикуют за его стремление к созданию легких зрелищ, за попытку избежать сложных драматических тем, обосновывая это желанием публики уйти от ежедневных проблем в мир фантазий. Тем не менее, наряду с многочисленными мюзиклами [ musical], многие из которых отнюдь не относятся к разряду "легких", в бродвейских театрах идут серьезные драматические пьесы [ straight play].
